While they may be cute to look at, the rest couldn’t be further from the truth. Hippos are ferocious and regarded as highly deadly animals. They can defend themselves against dangers, even people, thanks to their huge teeth and tusks. Sometimes the parent hippos’ tempers take a toll on their offspring. A juvenile hippo stuck in the crossfire of an altercation between two adults runs the risk of being gravely injured or perhaps crushed. The video gaining traction online starts out with a giant hippo minding his own business, having a drink in murky water. Almost appearing camouflaged, a crocodile can be seen at the surface of the water, just under the hippo’s mouth. In the wild, it happens frequently when two fierce creatures come face to face. The territory is the main reason they attack each other, followed by food and water. Both crocodiles and hippopotamuses are territorial, and they occasionally engage in conflict over territory. Yet, seeing a crocodile attack a hippo is quite uncommon. The large-toothed hippopotamus instantly attempts to bite the apex predator, only for it to escape its jaws. It’s incredible how naturally the crocodile blends in effortlessly with the cloudy, brown foam on the water’s surface. Unfortunately for this croc, that is not enough to keep him safe. With his nose completely submerged, the hippo inches closer to the croc, just in time for it to bite its snout in defense. Here’s the thing, whether you’re a human or a wild animal, you don’t want to go toe-to-toe with a hippo. They’re at the top of the food chain and will have no problem reminding you that you’re not. Another swift attack on the crocodile and the rest is history. It isn’t until the hippo turns to head in a safer direction that we see there is a calf there as well. Just like humans and other animals, hippos will defend their families, even if it’s to death. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want to be caught out in the open with either of these animals! We can’t tell from the video if the crocodile made it out okay, but it doesn’t look like the hippo killed it. Hopefully, it was just a warning to stay away from its calf and find somewhere else to roam. Check out the wild video below!
