Two experienced divers in Papua New Guinea descended into the depths of the ocean to look for sharks. Using water bottles, they created vibrations in the water meant to attract sharks. They normally do this at shallower depths, typically around 100-120 feet. They find Silver Tip and Grey Reef Sharks. In this video, they decided to go down a bit deeper to look for bigger animals. One diver records the encounter. Periodically, he glances at his dive watch to keep track of their time. They only planned to be at that depth for a couple of minutes, he wrote in the commentary that accompanied the video. After that, the divers planned to go back to their normal depth. A large shark decided that he’d come to check out what they are doing. Around halfway through the footage, the man holding the water bottle suddenly tenses up and puts out one of his fins. Something must be coming!
A Shark Encounter
The next shot shows a shark swimming directly at him. It goes for his head and butts up against him. The man rolls to one side and the shark swims off. Amazingly, the shark did not bite the man. “Apart from a severe headache (the shark actually hit him square in the head!) he was completely unscathed having not so much as a scratch on him,” the divers wrote. They speculated that the shark initially thought that they were other fish to eat but decided to go on his way once he got close enough to see that they were actually divers. They think that it was probably a large Silver Tip Reef Shark. Because they are underwater and the entire encounter takes place so quickly, it’s hard to get a clear identification of the shark. Other possibilities include a Grey Reef Shark or a young Bull Shark. The two divers do note that they have a lot of experience diving and familiarity with these waters. The man who came head-to-head with the shark is a dive instructor and has completed over 5,000 dives. These types of adventures should be left to the professionals. This was the first time that these two divers had gone down to these depths and even they recognized that they didn’t have the right gear.
