There’s nothing quite as spectacular as what one person captured during their stay at a private game reserve. An elephant in the desert heard the sound of lapping water and was likely enticed by the possibility of getting a drink. A video posted by ViralHog on Youtube Shorts features a group of people relaxing in a pool while on vacation. You can see a woman sitting on the pool’s edge as she looks over her shoulder. Within seconds we see a gorgeous elephant come around the corner. Elephant populations are growing in South Africa, which is consistent with more people interacting with them. They are entirely safe drinking out of a saltwater pool, as long as it’s without any chemicals. Since they are inquisitive creatures, they will drink from any body of water that comes within reach. The people in the video are likely jealous to hear that elephants do not sweat when they’re hot. Because of this, they have to come up with creative ways to cool off. Elephants are known for their large, floppy ears. They help people keep cool by acting as heat radiators. In order to flap their ears and dissipate heat, elephants will boost the blood flow to certain areas. Elephants use their ears to produce a wind that cools their body temperature. Elephants cool their bodies by using mud and water. By retaining the water and muck, their skin helps them control their body heat. In addition to shielding them from the sunlight and bugs, mud also serves as sunscreen. A lot of people have filmed elephants coming up to pools and even taking a sip! This video in particular has a relatively heated comment section. One person wrote “Why are they even allowed to set up such places in the middle of a forest, that belongs to wildlife. Get out of there!” What do you think? Should reserves be able to build pools for tourists or simply keep the area natural for the wildlife? While many think it’s sad to see humans take over, it would truly be a remarkable thing to experience if you were sitting poolside.
